You begin in the fantasy world of Calradia as a descendant of a respected family, a beggar, or a merchant, you are struggling to survive. Warband characteristics a multiplayer mode but the crowning results is the single player gameplay. But the games are truly PvP focused on having no stripes to bring instead of multiplayer driven gameplay. You possess medieval combat in the likes of Chivalry & War of the Roses.

The big selling point of the series is no other game. Therefore you will get yourself looking past the crude graphics which feature in Mount & Blade. Hope this helps.At present, the game is not aged especially well visually, but the gameplay is where it truly excels. Other than that try and familiarize yourself with the different troop tree's so you know what you're fighting (and consequently what sells more to the ransom broker) and what the different modifiers on items actually mean. IMHO get Jeremus and level his medic skills, and get Klethi or Deshavi and level pathfinding and spotting (they're not exclusive but just level the skills up with one). The guide posted by u/TrotsTwats covers that really well. You'll want to farm out certain skills to companions. They can only be recruited when they are prisoners of parties you defeated, but they equipped with blunt weapons and are mounted. My advice is stay small (20-30) so you move faster, and recruit manhunters whenever you can. If you talk to travelers they'll tell you where they are located for 50 denars. They're in city taverns, but move around. You personally need this, you can't give this to a companion (more on that later). However, in order to take them prisoner you need points in the Prisoner Management skill. That is denoted on weapons as a "b" after their damage. Every enemy you knock out instead of kill will be available for capture at the end of battle (except lords they're different). You'll want to make money, easiest way to do that early on is ransoming prisoners. As far as horse archery goes that's a very specialist strategy simply because it requires a fair bit of skill point investment, but it's my favorite way to play (followed by lancer). I would try out different weapons to see what you like. There is a lot to learn beyond the mechanics so don't stress too much. You're going to mess up building your character some how. I suggest rolling with a King or Marshall (leader of the armies, you'll have to ask around to find out who a faction's marshall is since its not a permanent position) as they tend to get defeated and captured less. This can also give you an idea on the strengths and weaknesses of various soldiers in the factions.

Learn how to fight and survive in various positions, and get to know what it feels like to fight at level 1 and eventually level 30+. This is good training too, to get you accustomed to how proper warfare feels in M&B.

Some mods will allow you to enroll in a Lord's army. and when you are confident take on harder and harder enemies, and more and more at a time. Practice fighting 1v1, on foot, on horse, with bow, with spear, sword, shield, etc. Keep in mind regional banditry comes with various levels of difficulty and fighting styles, so the area around West Swadia is the easiest, littered with looters, the easiest criminals in the game. If you want something riskier but more rewarding, start attacking criminal bands. Too easy? Notch them up again, take on harder opponents. If its too hard, notch down the difficulty in the menus. If you aren't feeling confident in your skills, see how you fare against them. In neither case does it drain your health so you can do it over and over as many times as you like. Every town has an arena where you can fight a number of other bots. Littered across the map there are training fields where you can spar with various difficulties of bots. You won't dry the ire of the factions without good reason. That was a criminal, not a guard, don't worry. I spawned in the first town and was attacked on sight by a guard Very different but lots of new content and very different style of play.
